I am a UKCP registered psychotherapist and Relate certified counsellor with 25 years experience of working with individuals, couples, supervisees, groups and organisations in NHS, voluntary sector, educational and private settings. I am an M.A. in Gestalt Psychotherapy (University of Derby), hold the Relate Certificate in Marital and Couple Counselling. I am a registered member of United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and work to their professional code of ethics and practice including making provision for regular supervision and CPD.
I have worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist for Relate, Lancaster NHS Psychotherapy Clinic , Psychology Dept of Morecambe Bay Primary Care Trust and Lancaster University Student Counselling Service.
I have a strong commitment to on-going professional development over and above my original extensive trainings in person-centred, psychodynamic and Gestalt therapy. I have done shorter courses on the likes of Transactional Analysis and Solution Focussed Brief Therapy as well advanced workshops with noted U.S. Gestaltists such as Gary Yonteff (applied clinical practise) , Joseph Zinker (couple work) Susan Gregory (voicework) and Ruella Frank (developmental somatics). I've also developed an interest in Mindfulness through training with Bangor University's Centre for Mindfulness Research & Practise.
I have supported my couple work and relationship specialism, building on my Relate training and substantial practical experience by updating my training with Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships, Cambridge Relational Change, Jeremy Holmes, Jenny Riddell and Peter Phillipson.
Nature Therapy is a more recent development in my work. It is a way of describing ways of doing therapy that includes the environment. Shinrin Yoku (Forest Bathing), Soulcraft, Nature Reconnection, Wild Therapy and the impact of climate change on our daily lives are among the orientations that have influenced my work in this area. To learn more about this look at Nature Therapy in the menu on the left hand side.
Alongside psychotherapy I have a career in music as performer and educator. Out of a More Music Research Fellowship Award exploring the interface of music and therapy using voicework and improvisation, I developed “Playing The Voice” (PTV) - a methodology for using voice and improvising to explore emotional dynamics at intrapersonal, interpersonal and group levels. I have subsequently run numerous PTV workshops, developing the work for use in special needs environments (see Gobsmacked). I’ve done further voicework with Natalka Polyovna (Gratowski) , Bernadette O’Brian (Paul Newham) and Kevin Crawford (Roy Hart).
